Expensive direct flight vs cheap connection flight

It sounds weird at first that Düsseldorf – Frankfurt – Krakow – Frankfurt – Düsseldorf is cheaper than Frankfurt – Krakow – Frankfurt.
But what is the airlines point of view: A direct flight has high quality. Customers are willing to pay more for it. The company has a unique selling point.
Other European companies also offer transfer connections. There is competition – let’s use it!

Let’s have a look at the example above. The beginner could have the idea to book 4 cheap flights and use the 2 middle ones only.
But CAUTION: If you don’t use the first flight segment, all following segments will expire and get worthless. If you finish with an unused flight segment, your check-in baggage will be transfered to the booked destination – say good by to it.
So you can see: Bad idea.
We find a way out by using shuttle trains or buses with flight number. Noshow can be hidden. Important is the online check-in. There are feeder trains with flight numbers from/to Cologne, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Kassel, Mannheim and Würzburg. There are buses e.g. from/to Saarbrücken and Strasbourg (very interesting, because foreign market with nice domestic competition).

Here is a concrete example:

14.05. Frankfurt – Krakow
16.05.Krakow – Frankfurt
Price EUR 644.38

14.05. Cologne – Frankfurt (train with flight number)
14.05. Frankfurt – Krakow
16.05. Krakow – Frankfurt
16.05. Frankfurt – Cologne (train with flight number)
Price EUR 319.95

Don’t forget the online check in for the outbound flight!

Enjoy saving!
